Why is my Etsy thumbnail blurry?
3 min read
An Etsy thumbnail usually looks blurry for one of four reasons: the first photo is under 2,000 pixels, the thumbnail is zoomed in, Etsy's compression softened it, or the photo was soft before you uploaded it. Etsy's image help recommends photos at least 2,000 pixels wide and tall, and warns that photos "may appear less sharp after being uploaded due to compression of the image files". Upload a sharp JPEG of 2,000 to 3,000 pixels in sRGB, leave the thumbnail zoomed out, and most blur goes away.
What makes an Etsy thumbnail blurry, and how do I fix each cause?
| Cause | How to tell | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The first photo is too small | The listing form shows "Listings look best with photos at least 2000 pixels wide" | Upload the original camera file, at least 2,000 pixels on both sides |
| The thumbnail is zoomed in | You moved the Adjust Thumbnail slider, or the product is small in the frame | Zoom back out; if the product looks too small, reshoot with it larger but still inside the safe zone |
| Etsy's compression | The file looks sharp on your computer but soft on Etsy, most often with PNGs and with photos full of small text or fine patterns | Upload a clean JPEG exported once at high quality, around 1 MB (one seller reported that Etsy compresses PNGs harder). Make the first photo a photo of the item, and put worksheets, prints or labels with small type in later slots |
| The photo was soft to begin with | It looks soft on your own screen at 100% zoom | Reshoot with steady support, more light and focus on the item; no resizing restores missed focus |
Colors that look dull or wrong are a separate problem. Etsy converts every photo to sRGB, so convert it yourself first if the colors shift after upload.
Why does my Etsy thumbnail look sharp in my shop but blurry in search?
Different Etsy pages crop and size the thumbnail differently. Shop home shows a square, while sellers have reported portrait and landscape crops in search in 2025 and 2026, and some search views that zoom in further than the preview. A zoomed crop enlarges part of the photo, so it shows blur that the shop page hides. Keep the product in the middle of the photo with room on every side, so no view needs to zoom; the guide to Etsy photo size and ratio shows the safe zone for square and landscape photos.
How do I fix an Etsy photo that is too small if I can't reshoot it?
Upscale it, rather than stretching it. Etsy's help notes that when you increase an image's size, "you may lose resolution and pixelation may occur", because an ordinary resize only spreads the same pixels further apart. An AI upscaler such as Nightjar's Upscale enlarges the photo you already have without making a new image of the product.
Choose the size by the photo's shape. A square photo reaches Etsy's 2,000 pixels at 2K, which makes it 2,048 pixels on each side, for 1 Credit. A 4:3 photo needs 4K, 2 Credits, because its short side at 2K is only 1,536 pixels. New accounts start with 6 free Credits and no card. Etsy wants listing photos of the actual item, so check the upscaled photo against the item before you upload it.
