How can I create a close-up image of my product using AI?

Quick Answer

Generate a new close-up rather than cropping a wide shot. With Nightjar you direct the framing through a saved arrangement, the lighting through a saved photographic look, and then bring the result to a high-resolution target so the detail still reads clean on a product page.

What makes a good close-up

A close-up that reads on a product page has:

  • Macro focus: the background falls into shallow depth of field and the detail stays sharp.
  • Lighting tuned for texture: raking or directional light, not flat fill.
  • Native resolution: the detail is rendered at high resolution rather than enlarged from a wider frame.

Why cropping a wide shot does not work

Cropping discards pixels, so the result looks soft or grainy. Lighting that flattered the full product shot is usually too even for a detail shot, so contrast and surface character disappear at the same time.

How to generate a close-up in Nightjar

  1. Upload the product Asset, the canonical name for an image stored in Nightjar.
  2. In the Create tab, open the Composition picker. Nightjar separates the framing, angle, and product placement into a reusable arrangement called a Composition. Pick one with a tight crop or macro framing.
  3. Open the Photography Style picker. A Photography Style is a reusable visual direction that sets camera feel, lighting, mood, color, and atmosphere together. Choose a Style with shallow depth language, such as macro product, portrait-style close-up, or editorial telephoto, so the detail reads sharp against a soft background without re-prompting every image.
  4. Add Custom Directions, the user-written notes layered on top of the chosen ingredients, such as "extreme close-up of the fabric weave" or "macro shot of the embossed logo."
  5. Generate at 2K or 4K so the detail has the pixels to hold up at listing size.

When you already have a wide shot

If you already have a hero image and want detail variants from it, two options work well together:

  • Photoshoot is a Workflow that expands one input Asset into four cohesive AI-directed variants. It can vary pose, camera angle, framing, crop, and detail emphasis while keeping the same product, lighting, and styling. Use it when you want a small set of related close-ups from one strong source.
  • Reframe, one of Nightjar's Edit Shortcuts (the fast paths in the Edit tab for common edits), pre-fills a /ratio picker so you can re-crop the image to a tighter aspect ratio. Pair it with Upscale, the Workflow that brings an existing Asset to a 2K or 4K long-edge target while preserving product content, so the new crop has the resolution to look clean on a product page.

Reusing the look across a catalog

Once a Composition, Photography Style, aspect ratio, and resolution are working for your detail shots, save the Create-form setup as a Recipe: a Team-owned saved configuration that captures the ingredients, Custom Directions, and output settings so you can apply the same close-up direction to the next product without rebuilding the brief.
