How do I create a reusable Background in Nightjar?

Create a reusable Background in Nightjar from Scenes in the desktop sidebar, or Studio > Scenes on mobile. Choose Backdrops or Locations, then select New backdrop or New location. You can upload a scene photo or describe a scene for Nightjar to generate. Once saved, the named Background is available to your Team and can be selected in future Product Photography requests without uploading or describing the setting again.

Choose a Backdrop or Location

A Backdrop is a repeatable surface or studio setting, such as a marble counter, oak tabletop, or paper sweep. A Location is a full environment, such as a kitchen, courtyard, or apartment.

Nightjar initially offers Backdrops for Product only shots and Locations for With model shots, but either kind can be used with either subject. Choose according to the setting you want to reuse. For a plain white or other flat-color image, use Color under Setting in Create; you do not need to create a Background.

Create a Background from a photo

1. In Scenes, open Backdrops or Locations and select New backdrop or New location.
2. Keep Upload a photo selected. Check the Backdrop or Location choice in the dialog.
3. Enter a Background Name that you will recognize later, such as “Oak table by window.”
4. Under Scene Photo, use Upload for a new image or Library for an image already in Nightjar.
5. Select Create Background and wait for Nightjar to prepare the scene.

If Nightjar detects a product, person, or other foreground subject, it automatically removes that subject and reconstructs the scene behind it. This removal is part of creating the Background, not an optional setting. Use this path to retain the setting from a photograph; it will not save the person in that photo as a Fashion Model.

Saving an already-clean uploaded scene costs no Credits. If Nightjar generates a cleaned image to remove a foreground subject, creation costs 1 Credit. Inspect the saved scene for leftover objects or distorted surfaces before using it for new photography.

Create a Background by describing a scene

1. Open New backdrop or New location, choose the kind, and select Describe a scene.
2. Enter a Scene Description. For example: “An empty pale limestone counter, a warm grey wall behind it, and soft window light from the left. Leave the center clear.” Describe the setting you want to save, not the product you will photograph later.
3. Select Generate Scenes. Nightjar requests four scene candidates to choose from.
4. Select the candidate you want, enter its Background Name, and select Save Background.

Generating candidates costs 1 Credit per generated scene, or 4 Credits for a complete four-scene set. Those Credits pay for generating the choices, even if you do not save one. Saving your selected candidate does not add another charge. If you use Back to revise the description and generate again, the new candidates incur their own Credit cost.

Use the saved Background in Product Photography

Open the Create tab (Generate > Create on mobile) and choose the product you want to photograph. Under Setting, select Scene, then open the Backdrops or Locations tab and select your saved Background. Its name and preview appear in the Create form. You can also use Create new inside this picker to make a Background while setting up a shot; select the saved card afterward to apply it.

The Background supplies the setting. Photography Style supplies the photographic look, including lighting, color, and mood. Reusing the same Background keeps the chosen scene reference available across products; it does not lock every background pixel in the generated images. Edit or delete a custom Background

Return to Scenes and use the edit control on your custom Background's card. Edit Background lets you change Background Name and Scene Description, then select Save Changes. These text edits are free and do not regenerate the saved image. To use a different scene image through this flow, create another Background.

Use the card's delete control and confirm Delete to remove a custom Background from your library. Existing generated Assets keep their background history. Premade Backgrounds do not expose these edit and delete controls.
